Pets are becoming a significantly important part of spending within the households of Birmingham. Research published in 2025 found that dog owners are expected to be spending an average of £2101 a year on their dogs and £1124 on their cats. This works out to roughly £175 a month on dogs and £94 a month for cats.

This money is going towards far more than just food. Pet owners are paying for insurance, grooming, treats and toys.It is estimated that even basic ongoing care costs at least £69 a month for a small dog and £79 a month for a cat. For Birmingham households, this means that pets can represent a significant regular expense- but for many owners the companionship shown to them by their pets make these costs worth every penny.
